Women’s Leadership Program Update

Australia Awards Mongolia Women's Leadership Program (WLP) participants attending forums and seminar workshops to improve their managerial and leadership skills January 2015.

Women’s Leadership Program (WLP) participants have been active since their Orientation Retreat (29 January – 1 February 2015). They have attended forums with influential leaders and seminar workshops to improve their managerial and leadership skills. They have also had opportunities to attend networking events to expand their professional links and improve mentorship skills.

Activities successfully completed to date are:

  • Orientation Retreat and Leadership training
  • Forums with presentations by:
    • Ms Khulan D, Founder of Tavan Bogd
    • Members of Parliament: Oyun S MP; Oyungerel Ts MP; Batchimeg M MP
    • Ms Munkhuu D, renowned feminist and activist
    • Ambassador Piper Campbell, US Ambassador to Mongolia.
  • Seminars on:
    • Gender mainstreaming and the global experience and discussion on gender barriers in Mongolia and their relationships with Human Resource policy and tools
    • Mastering the media with particular insights into using media tools effectively for self-branding and promoting ideas
    • Networking to use self-branding and promoting of ideas and extracting value from networks
    • The art of public speaking.
  • A networking event on Corporate Governance and the Importance of Corporate Quotas in the Participation of Women with presentations by Ms Undraa A, Ms Onchinsuren D and Mr Unenbat J.
  • A social activity, attending the opera ‘Carmen’ to celebrate International Women’s Day

In total, WLP participants have attended 13 events. The events have generated positive feedbacks from participants.

Women's Leadership Program (WLP) participants attending forums and seminar workshops to improve their managerial and leadership skills since the commencement of the program in January 2015.

Within the frames of WLP, participants have designed and are currently implementing 4 different community development projects including:

1. Success Through Reading
Implementing a small-scale education program along at the national orphanage Unur Bul center. The participants plan to renovate and equip a library and a spare room for children to read, develop and play with creative toys to improve IQ and brain development (some facilities for disabled kids), train teachers, librarians and some senior students, and increase the center’s networking and communities.

2. Walk, Walk, Walk Mongolia
Creating healthy walking program and fitness videotapes for young and elderly to promote healthy lifestyle. Majority of the work will be video promotions and publicity and creating a public campaign for walk.

3. Creative Aging
Promoting the reintegration of pensioners into the workforce through consultations, working to provide services for retirees, and reintegrating them into society by engaging them in lecturer series to young professionals

4. Support through Sign Language Standardization
A campaign to raise awareness for the need of sign language interpretation of children’s shows to help integrate them better into society. The campaign aims to support TV kids’ shows to get translations and to work at the policy level to standardize the practice.

WLP participants have actively used Facebook to exchange views on gender equality and leadership and to reflect on key points raised in discussions at forums and seminars.

Through the WLP, participants have learned, among other things, to:

  • “adopt different leadership styles depending on circumstances”
  • “compromise on small things to achieve bigger goals”
  • “learn from failure and criticisms”.

In relation to the WLP’s central theme of gender equality, forum and seminar guest speakers and presenters have delivered common messages that women should support each other and complement each other’s work and achievements.
